Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification)

What is Form I-9?

In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), Iowa State University must verify the identity and employment authorization of each employee within the first three business days of employment. To achieve this, Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) is electronically completed in Workday for all student and non-student employees hired after November 6, 1986.

Timeline: 

  • Employee submits Form I-9 Section 1 in Workday no later than the first day of employment.
  • Employee presents identity and employment authorization documents within 3 business days of the start of employment. 

Locations:

  • International students (e.g. F-1 or J-1 immigration statuses) and international scholars (e.g., J-1, J-2, H-1B, TN, O-1 immigration statuses) complete the Form I-9 process with the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) located at 4530 Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way, Ames, IA 50014. 
  • U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents (i.e., green card holders) complete the Form I-9 process with the University Human Resources Service Center located at 3810 Beardshear Hall, 515 Morrill Rd., Ames, IA 50011. 

Documents: 

Employee must present original, unexpired documents that establish:

  • (a) identity suitable for international travel, and
  • (b) employment authorization in the U.S.

*For the ISSO Form I-9 process, employee also needs to present information about any prior U.S. immigration statuses.
